I Knew You Before

Was a time you’d kick the door in
Laughter as you signed your name
Fear was distant … stayed away
Knew yourself…who not to blame.

Then I witnessed something else
Smothered on a different shelf
You lost your swag and cocky grin
Given way to sips of gin.

Then he came and stole your pluck
I didn’t know… but you went missing
On a different path we were
I should have tried to stop the stir.

But that’s not what life will deal
You had to go with what felt real
I’m glad you’re back there at the door
You are the one I knew before.
